★ The guide · updated as we test

The best AI receptionists,
graded — not listed

Every ranking you’ve seen was written by affiliates or by the vendors themselves. This one is built from recorded test calls, scored blind against one public rubric — and every card shows exactly how many calls its grade rests on.

Every industry we test

One guide per trade, each built on that trade’s own call mix and its own scenario suite.

With published grades: Dental practices · Auto service departments · Childcare centers · Contact centers · Freight brokers · Hotels · Law firms · Medical clinics · Outbound sales · Property management · Restaurants · Spas and salons

Suite built, nothing graded yet: Banks and credit unions · Home services · Insurers · Recruiting teams · Veterinary clinics — the guide explains what we will grade and what to ask a vendor in the meantime.

Why every other “best AI receptionist” list is broken

Search for the best AI receptionist or AI answering service and you’ll find two kinds of pages: affiliate lists ranking whoever pays the highest commission, and vendors ranking themselves first. Neither has ever placed a test call.

Proofground is the third kind — the kind that exists for restaurants and cars but never existed for AI: an independent guide that actually tests the product. Our synthetic callers phone each vendor again and again with the calls a real front desk gets: a new patient booking, a reschedule, an insurance question, an after-hours emergency, a caller who mumbles, a caller who changes their mind mid-sentence.

What earns an A: completing the caller’s actual task, verifying the right details, handling interruptions and accents gracefully, escalating emergencies correctly, and doing it all without long silences or repeated questions. Every one of those is a scored line item — the scoring criteria are published.

How to use this guide

  • Start with the grade, then open the report card — every score is backed by a recorded call, and re-reviewed by a person on any dispute. Verified vendors read the transcripts and per-check reasoning behind their own results.
  • Two checks stand behind every letter. Every failing result is re-examined before publication by a panel of three reviewers, each running at a different AI lab, asking one question: was this genuinely the product’s failure — or our caller’s, or a limit of the demo line we called? The majority decides, and a split panel leaves the failure standing. Every judged pass-or-fail is then judged a second time by a model at a different AI lab. Clear agreement settles it. A disagreement — or a score sitting too close to the pass line for agreement to mean much — goes to a person, and nothing resting on that result publishes until they have ruled.
  • Check the basis. A grade earned on a vendor’s public demo line is labeled exactly that; demo deployments are sometimes limited on purpose, and we say so rather than punish it.
  • Match your industry. A great dental receptionist and a great freight dispatcher are different jobs — start from the industry guide that matches your call mix.
  • Ask vendors the hard questions. Our buyer’s checklist is the ten questions that separate demos from production.

Common questions

Which AI receptionist is best?

The honest answer: the one that passes the calls your business actually gets. Our report cards grade each vendor on booking, rescheduling, insurance questions, emergencies, message-taking and more — open the report card and match it to your call mix.

Do vendors pay to appear in this guide?

No. We choose who to test, we pay for the testing, and we take no affiliate commission. A vendor can buy more frequent testing of its own product and nothing else. Paying changes when and how often we test — never how you are scored.

How often are grades updated?

Each report card is dated, and vendors are re-tested on a rolling schedule. AI products change fast — a grade always tells you when the calls were made.

Can I request a vendor be tested?

Yes — tell us who you’re considering, and vendors can also request their own assessment. Testing runs on our rubric and our schedule either way.

What if my industry has no grades yet?

Then the industry page says so plainly rather than implying we looked and found nothing good. You can still run our test calls against your own shortlist, and the ten-question checklist works on any vendor’s demo line.
